Did you know that sports psychology can be applied to any performance situation and not just sports?
For example, I’ve done business seminars for big companies such as Beyer and Alcon Labs to help give their employees the mental edge.
Recently, I coached an independent businessman, Bob, about his challenges with the mental game (this was a free session I do for new members who join my online mental training program).
Bob was having trouble getting in a zone state because of several distractions. Personal issues were pulling his focus away from work….
Bottom line: He was not getting tasks done to his satisfaction because of the multi-tasking he was doing.
Multitasking, or focusing on several tasks at once, is a big buzz word in the business world, but it’s not really effective for getting into a zone focus. You can’t multi-task as an athlete…
Why? When multi-tasking, you’re switching your focus back and forth between tasks, which is ineffective. It’s similar to a batter focusing on the pitcher and the 3rd base coach or worrying about getting a hit at the same time.
The key to a zone focus is narrowing your focus on one task–at a time. The batter should only focus on the seeing the ball well and not other mental interference. The gymnast should only think about one section of the routine at a time, not the score she wants.
Often routines are a great way to focus your mind in a serial fashion. When you have a preshot routine for batting, golf shots, or serving, it helps you focus on the important cues for execution in a step-by-step fashion.
No one is perfect with their concentration and you will become distracted at times.
When you become distracted or start to focus on too many performance cues, you must recognize this, stop, and refocus on the ingredients of your routine.
Back to Bob… he was unable to complete his work because he was trying to focus on too much at one time. This is similar to athletes who over think their performance.
