Help Your Young Athletes Concentrate In Sports
Are you a parent of or coach of an athlete that tends to struggle with focus during competition?
In this week’s sports psychology podcast, mental game of sports expert, Dr. Patrick Cohn, answers a question from Chris, a parent whose athlete struggles with focus in competition.
“Let’s address that first issue about getting excited before the game. One of the things we know about focus is if you can get athletes up, if you can get athletes juiced, psyched, or excited about playing (most athletes are on their own) then we know focus is going to improve. In other words, the level of intensity equals the level of focus.
If your athlete is in a warm up situation and doesn’t look good at all, well, maybe that athlete hasn’t woken up yet, doesn’t have the proper level of intensity. Intensity is going to equal focus. You need to look into that; is your athlete kind of sleeping at the beginning of competition? Then, they haven’t gotten their heart rate up, they haven’t gotten focused, they haven’t gotten excited — bottom line: they don’t feel challenged yet.”

The Focused Athlete
It’s probably no secret that you have many opportunities to become distracted in sports. Athletes are bombarded with both internal and external distractions everyday in practice and competition. Focused athletes are able to get the most from their skills because they are more efficient with practice and more concentrated in competition. Athletes who lack focus let distractions run wild through their mind and don’t know how to adjust or refocus.
The Focused Athlete was developed for any level coach, parent, or junior to professional athlete who wants to improve performance and gain a competitive edge. It does not matter if you are a fledgling junior athlete; or a seasoned professional, plagued with distractions; or you just wanting to learn how to improve concentration…
“The Focused Athlete” is a complete system to teach you how to focus like a champion and harness the power of a zone focus every time you step on the playing field, court, track, or course in practice and games!
