How Fragile is Your Confidence?
Do you or your athletes enter competition without a full dose of confidence? Does confidence waver easily in the opening moments of competition?
As I work more and more with athletes, I realize just how fragile confidence can be for some…
One student said: “If I make one or two mistakes in the opening moments of the game, I lose confidence quickly and it’s hard to regain it.”
Hold on! How can an athlete’s confidence be so fragile or fleeting after years of practice and competition?
I can think of four reasons and I know there is more:
- If you don’t understand what true confidence really is…
- If you don’t know how to cope with adversity or mistakes…
- If you think you need to be perfect every moment of the game…
- If your expectations get in the way…
…it’s very easy to have fleeting or fragile confidence in sports.
Part of my work as a mental coach to athletes is to help them understand what undermines true confidence and how to keep it under adversity or after mistakes.
But, you have to address these confidence busters before you run onto the field, court, or rink.
And I’ll teach you or your athletes how to be more proactive with your confidence starting this month in my Fall 2009 sports psychology teleclass series.
I offer six live mental toughness teleclasses a year (3 in the fall and 3 in the spring) for my members at Peaksports Network and Kids’ Sports Psychology. You can preview all the past classes I’ve given here:
