Overcome Intimidation In Competition

In “Sessions with Doc,” Dr. Patrick Cohn answers your sports psychology and mental training questions about how to overcome being intimidated by competitors.

Here’s the question Dr. Cohn answers this week about overcoming intimidation to perform well in competition:

TERESA ASKS: “My son (who races motocross) just turned 11 and rides to his ability in practice and local races. But he folds at the national level and doesn’t ride anywhere near his ability that he shows at the local level. How can I find a way to get him to race and not worry about who he is racing?”

Watch the video below to hear what Dr. Cohn has to say to Teresa about her son’s mental game.

  1. Hi, Dr. Patrick, I get intimidated over a lot of small things. For example, I might get intimidated by the size of the opposing team, or the condition of the baseball field. This happens a lot, and I think sometimes it affects me. Hopefully this video will help me cope with my intimidations. Still, if you have even more advice on this subject, please email me back. Thank you.

  2. You want to find the “silver lining” in all these situations that you feel intimidated. For example, the size of the opposing team, what do you have that they don’t? Maybe you are quicker or have good vision of the field?
